I attempted to make this sauce in the fall. I thought how nice would it be to make pasta sauce in the crock pot, simmering all day, how wonderful it would taste. All I would have to do is just make the pasta when I got home from work and that would be it.
When I walked in the door that fall night hoping to walk into my kitchen with the smells of wonderful sauce….I made one fatal error….I forgot to turn the crock pot on! I was so disappointed!!
So, when I attempted this again the other night, I made SURE that the crock pot was turned on before I left for work.
Ingredients:
3/4 pound ground sirloin*
1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes
6 fresh roma tomatoes
1 green pepper
1/2 white onion
4-6 cloves of garlic
oregano
basil
salt and pepper to taste
In the bottom of the crock pot, place the ground sirloin. In a blender, I mixed the rest of the ingredients until smooth. Pour over the meat, add the seasonings and cook on low all day.
*you want to use a lean type of meat, so its not swimming in fat all day. Sirloin is 5% fat, so that’s what I used.
When you get home, the meat will just need to be broken up with a potato masher. It’s super easy and this time it worked out fantastically. The only thing I would add is tomato paste, but it still came out great without it.
Have you made pasta sauce in a crock pot before? What’s your recipe?
Ugh, don’t you hate that! I do that all the time with my rice maker. I rinse the rice and plop it into the base then walk away. An hour later, I check to see why the rice isn’t done…:(
LOL…I thought I was the only one out there who broke up their meat with a potato masher! Great minds we have. 🙂
I love my crockpot, but don’t utilize it enough.
Have a great weekend!
I didn’t know that you could do uncooked hamburger meat in the crockpot – thinking about that now doesn’t makes sense, as I think nothing of throwing an uncooked roast in there! And a potato masher? I’m going to try this recipe, just for the novelty of using the masher!
You not turning on the crockpot made me laugh out loud because I did the same thing last week! 🙂
Looks awesome!! I posted a recipe for it on my blog a little while ago. So yummy!
I’ve never made pasta sauce in a crockpot, but damn, that’s a good idea! And know what? I’ve done the “forget to turn it on” trick myself. Ooops! Have a great Friday Jenn!
I’ve never forgotten to turn on the slow cooker. But our oven light button is red so I always subconsioucsly think red=off and hit the REAL off button instead. I can’t tell you how many times the buzzer has gone off and I go downstairs to see that dinner/baked goods are only halfway done b/c instead of turning the light off, I turned off the power. :/
This sounds great – I never thought to use sirloin! I used this recipe:
