The other day I made roasted chick peas for the first time and they turned out great. They were super crunchy, I added garlic salt, cumin and chili powder. Basically, you take a can of chick peas, drain it and rinse it, throw it on a cookie sheet and I put 1 tsp. olive oil, then the spices and bake for an hour and 15 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes or so at 350. I gave them to my kids to try and all three of them loved it! It’s such a healthy snack when you want something crunchy and salty. But what if you feel like something sweet? I wondered if I could make a sweeter version of the roasted chick pea. I did the same thing as before, rinsed the beans, put them on a cookie sheet, added 1 tablespoon of sugar and 1 tsp. of cinnamon, 1 tsp. olive oil. This time I lowered the heat to about 300 and it took about 1 1/2 hours, stirring occassionally. Because of the sugar, I didn’t want it to burn before the chick peas roasted. You know when they are done because if you taste one it should be crunchy all the way through. If its still soft in the middle, put them back in. If you see that they are getting dark, just lower the temperature in your oven and cook them longer. Your house will smell so good! Once they came out, I drizzled them with honey. Let them cool for a while and then you can store them in an airtight container, you don’t have to refrigerate them. The only bad news, is I only made 1 can, which once they roast, the size reduces quite a bit, so next time I will make a bigger batch.
Once they were done, I thought of making a kind of trail mix for my kids to take to school for their lunches, you can make a big batch, or do like I did and just pour a little bit of the ingredients into a single size Ziploc bag.
- Honey Nut cheerios
- Sunflower seeds
- Almonds
- Honey Roasted Chick Peas
- Nature’s Path Pumpkin Granola +Flax
- A few chocolate chips
I took a small amount of each ingredient and put it in a Ziploc bag to add to my kids lunch, so if they eat nothing else, at least they will get something healthy and it will keep them full!
