So, yesterday was the first day of my walking experiment. I have decided instead of riding my bike to work, which only takes me about 10 minutes each way, to walk to work. It takes me 27 minutes to walk to work and if I did that both ways, that’s 54 minutes of exercise! AND, if I add another 40 minutes during my lunch at work, that’s a ton of walking.
So, it didn’t hurt that it was 65 and sunny when I left for work yesterday. I wore my Polar Heart rate monitor to calculate the calories burned…
Then at lunch I walked around the neighborhood and when I get back this is what my watch said:
Then, I walked home from work, picked up my daughter from her after school program which added an additional 15 minutes, so I walked 45 minutes after work.
I took my watch off at 9:30 last night, so by the end of the day, after wearing my heart rate monitor for 13.5 hours, this was my final number of the day.
So, I walked a total of 112 minutes yesterday. And the best part is it didn’t really seem to take that much time out of my day. I left a little earlier to get to work and I got home a little bit later, but it was awesome!
I live and work in Oak Park, IL. People come from all over the world to see the Frank Lloyd Wright (famous architect) house/walking tour. And it’s literally blocks away from my office, so I’ll share some of the houses during my walk yesterday:
So, all in all, it was a great day. And who wouldn’t enjoy going for a walk looking at beautiful houses!!
My game plan is to try this for 2 weeks and see if I lose any inches and pounds! Of course, I also have to keep track of what I eat too!
What is your favorite form of exercise if you could do anything you wanted??
What a great experiment! And you have such great places to walk!
Awesome!
Do you wear the HR monitor with a chest strap?
Andrea, yes I wear the chest strap all day too. It’s hardly know it’s there.
walking… I am loving it.
There is something called the 10,000 step diet. The basic idea is that whatever you eat (within reason), as long as you walk 10,000 aerobic steps a day, you can not be fat.
I of course started fat, but I am done from a 44 waist to a 38 waist. If you read my blog, you know I am not a dieter. But for the last 7 months, I have averaged 10,000 or more steps a day.
It takes me about an hour and 40 minutes, a little over 5 miles. And I feel great.
I tried running, and my knee went out on me. Too fat to put that much pressure on my old bones. But you are young, so no excuses…
Of course, good thoughts and I hope you find the workout that works for you.
Oh, and books on tape on your iPod… time breezes by

Walking is great exercise! I love that it’s not only good for my body but also for my mind. My favorite exercise are hilly, nature hikes. Unfortunately, I don’t get to do them as often as I’d like…
Have a great weekend!
Excellent!! I don’t know where you live but I hope you are able to do that all year round!
Not to be negative Nancy but walking for 2 hours does not burn 2000 calories. That number seems a bit off. Typically walking for about 20 minutes burns about 100 calories multiply that by 6 and you get about 600 calories. So I would check the accuracy because I doubt you burned more than 1000 calories from walking for 112 minutes alone.
That being said it is great that you were able to incorporate exercise into your. Keep up the good work. I’m sure you will meet your goals.
