I make sloppy joe’s for my husband and I at least once a month. It’s super easy, and I usually just buy ground sirloin beef and a can of Manwhich. It’s good, don’t get me wrong, but I was wondering if there was a recipe out there that I can make myself. I found one from a PBS cooking show called Everyday Foods. It’s pretty easy. The only difference I made was using a leaner beef than just regular ground beef, and using Pam cooking spray in place of the oil. I suppose you could also use ground turkey or ground chicken. The next time I make it I will try it with ground chicken because that sounds pretty tasty!
Sloppy Joes
Serves 4 | Prep time: 20 minutes | Total time: 40 minutes
In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Add onion, bell pepper, celery, and garlic; season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring frequently, until vegetables are softened, 5 to 7 minutes.
Add the ground beef to the skillet. Cook, breaking up meat with a wooden spoon, until it is no longer pink, 6 to 8 minutes.
Stir tomato sauce, ketchup, and Worcestershire sauce into beef mixture in skillet. Simmer until thickened, stirring occasionally, 6 to 8 minutes.
Season the mixture with more salt and pepper, as desired. Spoon onto buns, and serve immediately.
Per serving: 527 calories; 29.4 grams fat; 26.3 grams protein; 39.4 grams carbohydrates; 3.7 grams fiber (as shown) I lessened that by using Pam cooking spray and a leaner cut of beef, plus I buy Dominick’s or Jewel brand lite hamburger buns which are only 80 calories each.
ingredients
1 tablespoon canola oil (I used Pam cooking spray instead of oil)
1 medium onion, finely chopped
½ green bell pepper, finely chopped
1 stalk celery, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
Coarse salt and ground pepper
1 pound ground beef (I used ground sirloin)
1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce
¼ cup ketchup
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
4 hamburger buns, split and toasted
This was a super yummy meal, and I usually have all those ingredients on hand anyway, so it will be an easy go to meal when I am in a time crunch (when am I not it a time crunch?!)

Sarah called the “Slobby Joes” a couple weeks ago and that’s the term I’m going to use forever now.
That’s awesome!
